AI, Plainly

Why everyone is suddenly loud about this
The thing that changed was the price, not the science.
The noise is out of proportion to the novelty. The research behind these systems is decades old and was, for most of that time, an academic curiosity with a server bill. Two things changed recently, and neither of them was a breakthrough you would recognise from a headline.
The first is cost. Running these models is roughly 80% cheaper than it was a year ago, and about ten times cheaper than two years ago. When a capability drops ten-fold in price, it stops being a research budget line and becomes a Tuesday. The second is the interface. You no longer need an engineer between you and the machine. You need a sentence.
So the interesting question is not whether the technology works. It is why so few small businesses use it. About a quarter of residential contractors use AI in any meaningful way, while 74% say it is key to running an efficient business. That gap, between the people who believe it matters and the people who actually do something about it, is the entire opportunity.
And the reason for the gap is not what you would expect. Only 3% of non-users name cost as the barrier. Thirty-nine percent say they do not understand what it could do for them. Twenty-seven percent think their business is too small to bother. That is not a price objection. It is a comprehension problem wearing a price objection's coat, and it is the only kind of problem that a document like this one can actually fix.
Only 3% of non-users say cost is the barrier. Thirty-nine percent say they do not understand what it could do.
Why the other three quarters have not started
The bar that matters is the short one. Cost is the barrier almost nobody actually names.
